Curatorial text:The exhibition provides an overview of the artistic research performed by Magdalena Zoledz on the topic of post-photography – the “life of images” that is independent of the creator – and is an attempt to investigate the relation between the viewer and the work of art in the spirit of slow looking.Let us consider a hypothesis that images are an autonomous organic species co-evolving with another species – humankind. Images, in this case, become parasites that live inside the organisms of homo sapiens, multiplying through the ages and waiting for the right moment to break free. This would mean that the human being (the artist) is only their carrier – an incubator that enables them to grow alongside the changes taking place within the universe. Every so often, the parasitic species present in the artist's body break loose with a dramatic effect and become known as “works of art” [Mitchell, 2013].Functioning as a “living organism”, the image becomes a crucial constituent of posthumanist thought and post-photography, that creates hybrids and chimaeras, merges organisms, and separates the creator from its work, evoking the conviction of the independent functioning of works with their full background of desires, expectations and longings. Perhaps visual representations do not want to be interpreted, but only “experienced”. Possibly, they don’t want to be perfect in the broad sense of human aesthetic needs, and “low resolution” is the natural habitat in which they function. They may have no longings at all, but we are unable to establish this with full certainty... In line with the thinking of William J. Thomas Mitchell – What do pictures really want from us?In the 21st century, digital visual content is accused of taking over the world. Slogans such as “we live in a world of images” have become commonplace, as we no longer distinguish between reality and its image. Let us recall Jean Baudrillard’s theory [ Baudrillard , 2005] – in “hyperreality”, the image no longer points to its original but multiplies in the digital world as an autonomous entity, complete with its own growth dynamics, stand-alone potential to communicate with the audience, and an unlimited ability to reproduce (multiply). We are unable to separate the two worlds (the sign from reality, the simulacrum from prototype), but perhaps there is no longer any need for that.- Agnieszka Dela-Kropiowska

Inattentive frequencies are submerged in everything - both us and the things around live in a world of waves and vibrations. The sound of the sea, the singing of birds are rhythmicities: four, three two. This is the most ubiquitous range, presumably for all those entities that operate on the human scale. One Spanish artist has extended her sensorium with sensors connected to devices that record the movements of tectonic plates. For us, however, this spectrum of perception is inaccessible, we are only able to feel vibrations on a narrow scale while standing by the columns at a party, an earthquake, or a passing vehicle that sets the building we are in motion. These are unusual situations. Does this mean that the artist feels more every day thanks to the sensors? If the vibrations are constant, then maybe the brain has started to read them as noise that needs to be cancelled out. One of Lou Jaworski's works is about these very feelings, about the mind silencing external signals. On professional vinyl records, at the starting point of the gramophone needle, before the actual piece, silence is recorded - not absolute, but human, earthly (what do you think it is?). Magdalena Żołędź’s works are also about similar imperceptible waves, those which constitute the ubiquitous silence in the networked world that is barely visible to humans. They appear while constantly peering into the vibrating, humming pixels as the world around changes under the influence of the weather. The exhibition +Q NC Y is precisely about this.

AN IMAGE DICTATED FROM THE OUTSIDE

A series post-photographs, video and two objects. The project was a collaboration with Agata Knec

who designed music for the experience, 2021.

Works:
UV prints on black PCV hanging from the celling on steel rods (65x100, 80x100, 75x100 cm)
Video in a loop (30 sec)
Metal cube with adhesive vinyl print on it (h 30 cm)
Silicone black object with a speaker

Manifesto of the Post-photographic Image
Music composed by Agata Knec

The project was inspired by the early work of Krzysztof Bucki that focuses on formal experiments. Bucki was a painter who worked in Opole, Poland actively creating the Opole artistic community (from 1961). The exhibition is an attempt to reconstruct the issues that the artist dealt with - the methodology of creating images based on complex reasoning supported by maths. Zoledz relates these issues to the nature of digital photography and argues with the possibility of capturing an image with any methodology. From the analysis of Bucki's compositions, it is clear that it is not the aesthetic contemplation of geometric forms that inspires him, but scientific inquisitiveness, logic of thinking and mathematical speculation (Kowal, 1963).The exhibition was created thanks to the scholarship of the Marshal of the Opolskie Voivodeship "Marszałkowskie Talenty" and is co-founded by the Opolskie Voivodeship.

VACANT DREAM STATE

A publication created in collaboration with 280a Artist Association, edition 200, 2019.

In addition to the book, I created a 16-page blue diary that was hidden in the heart of the book.

Before the retreat, we were asked to read The Invention of Morel, a novel by Argentine writer Adolfo Bioy Casares, and I was drawn to the character Faustine. To me, she symbolised a perfect copy that everyone falls in love with.

I decide to write a story about the island from Faustine’s perspective.

Located on a green island covered by palm trees in the middle of the ocean, a group of artists tries to digitally archive its flora, fauna, and all its physical and metaphysical content in various medias. By constructing and collecting material on this island, they lose themselves in a fragmented narration which forms the non-linear reading of this collection. A link system in the book guides the reader through various possible story lines. The texts and image entries are an approach to define the island and all its (digital) content.

The narrative structure found in VACANT DREAM STATE is extended by an augmented video story, told in eight chapters [see the video below]. This parallel story line allows the reader to get closer insights into the idea of constructing and re-constructing nature, identity and reality within the island’s own organism.

At the end of the book - in case there is one - the reader is left behind with the question wether or not our surrounded natural environment is something real or by something called real or are we already living in our own simulations.

NIEOSWOJONE POJĘCIA. SŁOWNIK POJĘĆ POSTFOTOGRAFICZNYCH

My text was published in Nieoswojone pojęcia. Słownik pojęć postfotograficznych, edited by Anita Osuch, Dagmara Bugaj, and Marek Domański, in 2024 (ISBN 9788367028264). This publication brings together a diverse group of artists and researchers to examine and expand upon the concept of post-photography. I was honoured to contribute a text that explores post-photography from the perspective of a ‘living organism.’

FAUSTINE’S DIARY

My contribution to the Vacant Dream State photobook created in 2019, was a 16-page blue diary hidden within the book.

During the artist retreat with 280a Artist Association on a secluded island, I explored how digital images could be part of the island’s natural environment. Before the retreat, we were asked to read The Invention of Morel,
a novel by Argentine writer Adolfo Bioy Casares, and I was drawn to the character Faustine. To me, she symbolised a perfect copy that everyone falls in love with. For the Vacant Dream State publication, I wrote a story about the island from Faustine’s perspective.
